About Debs Hunt
In January 2001 the 1st Annual Debra Takayama Memorial Jr. Pheasant Hunt was held in Santa Barbara County to help introduce local youth to the great sport of hunting. Because of Debra’s love of children, the outdoors and hunting, this event was started by her husband and co-workers at the Department of Fish and Game to benefit youth hunting and to honor her memory and accomplishments.
Every year has seen an increase in the number of hunters that participation is now limited to 45 and selection is by lottery if more applications are received than hunting spots available. Youth hunters in possession of a valid California Junior hunting license are encouraged to apply for the hunt. Besides the actual hunt, throughout the day juniors are escorted to different seminars such as, hunter safety and enforcement, wildlife law enforcement, wildlife management, shooting skills (trap & target), and techniques of pheasant hunting. Lunch is also provided for all participants and volunteers.
Through the generosity of many donors, each participant will also receive some additional items relating to the outdoors, plus an opportunity to win a rifle or shotgun in a raffle drawing.
During the event, typical comments overheard from the hunters are “this is the best day of my life” and “this was so much fun”.
Our volunteers come from all walks of life….but all hold hunting dear to their heart and want to instill a love of hunting in the youth of today.
